Chuck and Dick pose with their host outside her apartment building. Kseniya Antonova spoke excellent English (as well as several other languages) and served as our interpreter for several events. Kseniya is a college student active in the Russian environmental movement - we spent a lot of time comparing notes on the problems in our respective countries

Chuck met these children while at a
roadside rest stop during one of our bus trips.
Despite the obvious language barrier, Chuck quickly made friends with them, thanks to a pocket full of American sweets. Now, can you tell which one is the banjo player...? Here's McLeod dining with our guide, Michael, in Novosibirsk. Mike (Misha) owns a commercial diving business on the inland waterways of central Russia. Lacking "interstate" highways, rivers and railroads are the mainstay of the Russian industrial transportation system. |

| McLeod made the overnight trips between Khabarovsk and Novosibirsk on Aeroflot Airlines. Despite Aeroflot's reputation, we encountered no problems. Though the service was spartan by western standards, the flights were not crowded. Upon boarding we quickly learned that the seats fold completely down, allowing one to become very comfortable indeed - something we think other airline companies should take note of! | Besides being a wonderful guide, Mike was also a master of logistics, organizing meals, transportation, souvenir shopping, and anything else we needed. He made sure we stayed on schedule while trying to visit and perform at several venues each day. His warning of "six seconds!" meant that the bus was leaving and we'd better be on it!
