Dick's Russian Tour Page!

Russian children proved to be a most captive audience.  In one of the schools in the Novosibirsk area. The visit was especially exciting, as the music served as a universal method to bridge the language and cultural barriers. After many of our school concerts the students would, in turn, perform for us!  We were often treated to delightful song, dance, and instrumental music by these very talented kids!  Russian children start training early and take their traditional performing arts very seriously. dick1.jpg (10779 bytes)

Dick in front of the statue of V.I. Lenin on the city square in Novosibirsk, near the Palace of Culture. Statues of  Lenin were common in this part of Russia, and not destroyed after the fall of the last communist government in Moscow.  Lenin's ongoing presence attests to the divergent political viewpoints to be found here as Russia experiments with western style government.

Morning of Day 1 in Vladivostok - Though a little jet lagged, we regroup at the business of one of our sponsors.  We've spent the night at  various homes, where our hosts graciously took us in and make us a part of their families. Vladivostok is quite a "frontier" town, in the truest sense of the word - we will never complain about Anchorage traffic again!

Dick was a lot of fun to have along on this trip, and made friends easily where ever we went.  McLeod was fortunate that he was able to join the band only about a month before our actual departure.  During our bus trip to Tomsk, we stopped at the Russian version of a truck stop. While out stretching our legs Dick encountered these guys and, of course, attempted to strike up a converstation! Proof positive that the fare at the truck stop was fresh, indeed!
